			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><b>11 September 2011.</b> It&#8217;s the 10th anniversary of that day of which Rabbi Brad Hirschfeld said:</p>
<p>&#8220;Religion drove those planes into those buildings, it&#8217;s amazing how good religion is at mobilizing people to do awful, murderous things. There is this dark side to it, and anyone who loves religious experience, including me, better begin to own that there is a serious shadow side to this thing.&#8221;</p>
<p>We have all experienced the threat firsthand on that fateful day in September 2001 when the screams of &#8220;Allah Akbar&#8221; were drowned by the thunderous impact of passenger jets crashing into the Twin Towers. We have all of us lived the terror, immediate or threatening, of continuing mutual reactionary consequences, of &#8220;infidels&#8221;, on both sides of the divide, brutally murdered, of children bleeding to death in Afghanistan and Iraq, of public unrest in protest of mere cartoons. But it is preferable, required even; better, the done thing, to be tolerant, to grin and bear, rather than to affront a believer&#8217;s sentiment by a tart remark. Rubbish! Shall we be tolerant? No, a thousand times no! It is feckless to be tolerant.</p>
<p>Contributing writer at TIME, Amy Sullivan, writes in <a href="http://swampland.time.com/2011/09/09/articles-of-faith-the-importance-of-understanding-religion-in-a-post-911-world/">Articles of Faith: The Importance of Understanding Religion in a Post-9/11 World</a>, that &#8220;the wishful thinking of the neo-atheists ignores the fact that a little religion often does a lot of good.&#8221;</p>
<p>A little bit of drugs also does a lot of good.</p>
<p>But the benefits are meticulously monitored an controlled.</p>
<p>Prescriptions by trained specialists are required to deliver the &#8220;lot of good&#8221; of &#8220;a little drugs&#8221;.</p>
<p>Religion.</p>
<p>&#8220;To fill a world with religion, or religions of the Abrahamic kind, is like littering the streets with loaded guns. Do not be surprised if they are used&#8221;, wrote Richard Dawkins in <a href="http://m.guardian.co.uk/world/2001/sep/15/september11.politicsphilosophyandsociety1?cat=world&amp;type=article">Religion&#8217;s misguided missiles</a>.</p>
<p>The world will be a much better place without reified mythology, no matter how cute the stories are.</p>
<p>I give you the city Jos, where <a href="http://www.hindustantimes.com/13-killed-in-communal-clashes-in-Nigeria/Article1-744337.aspx">religious slaughtering continues unabated</a>.</p>
<p>Religion. People, said Voltaire, who believe absurdities will commit atrocities. Period.</p>
<p>There is no place for religion in this day and age.</p>
<p>Not even &#8220;a little bit&#8221;.</p>

<p>So. It&#8217;s 21 May 2011.</p>
<p>We are all still here.</p>
<p>No rapture.</p>
<p>No earthquake. Well, no earthquake of significance. On average there are two earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or greater, on the Richter Scale, every day.</p>
<p>Camping is an idiot. So is Johannes Coetzee.</p>
<p>So is every &#8220;person&#8221; (I stretch the biological classification to the limit) that believes this apocalyptic, theological <em>Deus ex machina</em> crap, but is hiding behind the &#8220;no one knows the hour&#8221; nonspecific.</p>
<p>A few years ago I had breakfast with a theologian who confessed his shock and appal at a collegue&#8217;s conviction that extraterrestrial life forms were to visit Earth. Soon.</p>
<p>I asked what the difference might possibly have been between the delusion of this research peer and the agnosy of the lecturers and students at the Seminary, the buildings of which were visible from our pavement table in Stellenbosch.</p>

<p>Maar wat is nou eintlik die verskil tussen mense wat meen die wêreld eindig en Jesus kom haal sy kinders op 21 Mei 2011, en mense wat meen die wêreld eindig en Jesus kom haal sy kinders op &#8216;n onbekende toekomstige dag iewers in hulle leeftyd?</p>
<p>Setel die spot in die datum, of in die event?</p>
<p>Hoekom lag tradisionele gelowiges Family Radio se oortuigings af as gelowiges dieselfde oortuigings deel &#8211; en slegs oor die datum verskil?</p>
<p>In dieselfde koerant vandag is daar briewe oor pastoor Isak Burger se boek <em>5 minute voor en ná die dood</em> (ek dag dis twee verkillende boeke, maar wat weet ek nou) en &#8216;n berig oor ds Pieter Fourie se duiweluitdrywery.</p>
<p>Hoe glo tradisionele gelowiges oor wat na die dood gebeur en oor wat duiwels is en kan doen?</p>
<p>Is tradisionele oortuiginge aanvaarbaar as die uitkomstes &#8216;n vae toekomstige verwagting is, maar verwerplik as dit &#8216;n teenswoordige verwagting is?</p>
<p>Wat is nou eintlik die verskil tussen die events toe Jesus duiwels in &#8216;n spul varke ingedryf het en toe Fourie duiwels wie weet wáárheentoe gedryf het &#8211; met respek vir diereregte?</p>

<p>Volgens Borg, volgens Holtzhausen, is dit &#8220;verby die naïwiteit van kinders en die kritiese denkwyse van grootmense&#8221;.</p>
<p>Dink &#8216;n mens só oor die Bybel, aldus Borg-Holtzhausen, &#8220;word die verhale van die Christelike tradisie weer as werklike stories gehoor en besef jy dat hoewel die feite nie noodwendig geskiedkundig waar is nie, dit simbolies waar kan wees&#8221;.</p>
<p>Nè!?</p>
<p>Hoe is iets &#8220;simbolies waar&#8221;; nie eenvoudig &#8220;nie vals&#8221; nie? Is dit Orwelliaanse geloofspraak vir &#8220;leuen&#8221;?</p>
<p>&#8220;Jammer my vrou, daar was nie melk in die winkel nie. Dis simbólies waar&#8230; ek het bietjie vergéét om melk te koop.&#8221;</p>
<p>Hierdie sg &#8220;nuwe manier van oor &#8216;God&#8217; dink&#8221; is (met apologie aan Leonard Krishtalka vir sy tersaaklike analogie oor intelligente ontwerp) maar net om die tradisionele &#8216;God&#8217; uit te vat in &#8216;n goedkoop, geléénde, aandpak. &#8216;n Aandpak wat na sweet ruik, en met ou vetkolle op die lapelle en iemand anders se droeë bloed op die kraag.</p>
<p>Dis gewoon twak.</p>
<p>En soos André P Brink iewers in die sewentigerjare al gesê het, twak is tog so &#8216;n láng woord.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In Saterdag (22 Januarie) se <em>By</em> skryf Sandra Troskie van die Universiteit Stellenbosch se Sentrum vir Kennisdinamika en Besluitneming oor die “evolusie van God” – ‘n sexy nuwe manier om oor “God” te dink.</p>
<p>Troskie se stuk is onderaan hierdie artikel ingesluit.</p>
<p>Troskie sê: “Dít is wat die wêreld vandag nodig het: mense wat weer bereid is om hul eie gode in die naam van reg en geregtigheid uit te daag.”</p>
<p>Ek meen lankal dat as die gode van die Westerse godsdienste vandag geskep moes gewees het (hulle sou nie, want daar word nie meer gode geskep nie) hulle die status van voorsitters sou gehad het – wat deur aandeelhouers eerlik gehou kon word; en nie die status van onaantasbare konings van toendertyd nie.</p>
<p>Al wat egter &#8220;uitgedaag&#8221; kan word, is &#8216;n paradigma in daardie bepaalde denke wat &#8220;God&#8221; veronderstel &#8211; &#8220;God&#8221;, as sodanig, kan nie &#8220;uitgedaag&#8221; word nie&#8230;</p>
<p>Flip Schutte (<a href="http://www.spiritualiteit.co.za/artikel-antropologie-van-die-ontwykende-god.php">Die antropologie van die ontwykende God</a>) en Piet Muller (<a href="http://www.spiritualiteit.co.za/artikel-god-in-die-21ste-eeu-muller.php">Die evolusie van God in die 21ste eeu</a>) het albei onlangs op die <a href="http://www.spiritualiteit.co.za/">webblad van die Sentrum vir Eietydse Spiritualiteit</a> oor die ontwikkeling van die God-idee geskryf.</p>
<p>Ek is bitter skepties oor “spiritualiteit”.</p>
<p>“Spiritualiteit”?</p>
<p>Wat is “spiritualiteit”?</p>
<p>Die HAT sê die woord beteken “onstoflikheid”.</p>
<p>“Spiritueel”, sê die HAT, beteken “geestelik; onstoflik”, en “spiritualisme” is “die wysgerige leer wat al die stoflike as ‘n verskyningsvorm van die geestelike beskou”.</p>
<p>“Geestelik”… “van, eie aan, in, uit, vir, betreffende die gees van die mens; teenoor liggaamlik, sinnelik, stoflik, vleeslik”.</p>
<p>Ek het al by “onstoflike” van die bus afgespring.</p>
<p>Met die HAT-definisie van “gees” (“lewegewende beginsel in die mens; siel”) het ek teen 180° van die bus af begin wegloop.</p>
<p>Edward Abbey se sê kom by my op: “… I believe in rock: this apodictic rock beneath my feet.”</p>
<p>Die betoog vir die erkenning en bewusmaking en onderhoud van “spiritualiteit” is ‘n afbrekende tegemoedkomendheid wat die onsin wat die kerk verkondig vleuels gee.</p>
<p>“Spiritualiteit” is “God” in ‘n goedkoop aandpak, as ek asseblief Leonard Krishtalka se bondige vernietiging van intelligente ontwerp kan leen.</p>
<p>Schutte stel dit só: “… hierdie ‘soeke’-ding na God vir my persoonlik so &#8216;n moeilike konsep en so &#8216;n vreemde oefening. Ek weet eerlikwaar nie waarna of na wie om te soek nie.”</p>
<p>Maar ék wil verder gaan: Hou óp met die gesoek na “God” – om te soek is om op te treë in ‘n verwagting dat iets “gevind” kan word; in ‘n oortuiging dat iets bestaan… “God” kán nie (gevind word nie) want “God” ís nie.</p>
<p>Om dié onbestaande nou met ‘n <em>menagerie</em> van moederskap en melktert (“<em>motherhood and apple pie</em>”) mooipraatjies te vervang is eenvoudig stoepit en ‘n volslae mors van tyd en dinkkrag.</p>
<p>En dié soeke van “gerespekteerde akademici” laat oom Koos en tant Sannie darem nog toe om te hoop “Koning Jesus” is perdalkies, darem <em>aftirôl</em> nog in beheer.</p>
<p>Onaanvaarbaar!</p>
<p>Ek verwys <a href="../../../../../2008/11/08/terroriste-en-basaartannies/">elders</a> na Sam Harris, die skrywer van <em>The End of Faith</em>, se “konsentriese sirkels van dalende redelikheid”. Harris meen dat enigiemand op hierdie kontinuum noodwendig beskerming bied aan iemand anders wat nader aan die middelpunt van ekstremisme is. Dit beteken dat duidelik meelewende gelowiges, soos basaartannies en kooromies, wat in presies dieselfde “God” glo as Pat Robertson en James Dobson en D. James Kennedy en Jannie Pelser en Isak Burger en Piet Strauss en Angus Buchan, noodwendig aandadig is aan vergrype soos, byvoorbeeld, die ontkenning van wetenskaplike gegewes, die vertrapping van gay regte, die vervolging van rubriekskrywers en onderwysers en <em>DJs</em> en rolprentmakers omdat hulle aspris, goedgelowig, skerp of diepsinnig is, en Dominionisme.</p>
<p>Om die grens van redelikheid oor te steek en “God” (God, Allah, Vishnu, Watôkal – en by watter eufemistiese naampie ook al: “energie”; “bewustheid”…) as ‘n werklikheid te aanvaar, is om ‘n ruimte te help handhaaf waarbinne afgryslike monsters gedy. Of jy nou in die nok van die sirkel staan, of op die rand. Of jy nou passasierstralers in wolkekrabbers parkeer of groen en rooi jelliepoeding oor ‘n basaartafel bedien.</p>
<p>As die vergrype van die godsdiens ooit getemper of geneutraliseer gaan word, sal die aftakeling van die buitenste konsentriese sirkel af moet begin &#8211; daar waar die gewone meelewende kerkbankers hulle van die fundamentalistiese middelpunt en goedkoop godsdienstige propaganda disassosieër, maar inderdaad presies so waandenkend (<em>delusional</em>) is soos hulle medegelowiges in die middel. Wanneer hierdie “goeie” gelowiges hulle rol in die vergrype van die godsdiens besef kan ‘n nuwe hoofstuk in die mens se vooruitgang moontlik aanbreek.</p>
<p>Wanneer ek in debat tree met ‘n gelowige – ongeag wáár hy op die kontinuum van Sam Harris se konsentriese sirkels staan – sit ek “God” op die tafel. Ek sal “God” bely as die evidence dit aandui; ek verwag – ek vereis – dat my gespreksgenote “God” sal verwerp as die evidence dit aandui. Daarom kan ek <a href="../../../../../2008/08/03/%e2%80%98n-ope-brief-aan-professor-julian-muller/">Julian Müller, byvoorbeeld, nie ernstig opneem nie</a>, hoe vernuwend hy ook al mag dink, want hy praat van ‘n  “immer teenwoordige en altyd moontlike ‘God’” – ‘n niksseggende stelling nes dié van Noam Chomsky: “green ideas sleep furiously”, ‘n grammaties korrekte sin, maar niksseggend.</p>
<p>(Ek is ook onrustig oor Flip Schutte se “<a href="../../../../../2008/12/17/flip-schutte-het-n-mooi-gesindheid/">mooi gesindheid</a>”.)</p>
<p>En so van Chomsky gepraat. Hy skryf: &#8220;The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum &#8211; even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there&#8217;s free thinking going on, while all the time presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate.&#8221; (The Common Good, Odonian Press, 1998, p43.)</p>
<p>Mense wat absolute gevolgtrekkings maak op bevooroordeelde en onvolledige data is nie mense wat ek ernstig opneem nie. Of jy nou gelowig is of nie.</p>
<p>Hier is Troskie se stuk. Goed geskryf. Goed beredeneer. Maar net nóg ‘n bewys dat ons sonder die skepsel van bronstydperk veewagters kan klaarkom.</p>
<p>Magtag, hoe’t Douglas Admans nou weer gesê – “Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?”</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>Die evolusie van God (Ja, Hy verander ook)</strong></p>
<p><em>Die God van enige geloof is nie die Ewige Onveranderlike nie, eerder die ewig veranderende. Want soos ons verstaan van die werklikheid verander, sal ons godsbesef transformeer. Juis daarom kan religie nie sonder die wetenskap voortleef nie – en juis daarom moet ons ons gode uitdaag, sê SANDRA TROSKIE.</em></p>
<p>“God is dood.” Só het die 19de-eeuse filosoof Friedrich Nietzsche gesê en daarmee die 20ste-eeuse debat oor sekularisasie ingelei. God, so is in die vorige eeu voorspel, sal Sy plek toenemend aan die moderne wetenskap moet afstaan. Die mondigwording van die wetenskap, van die rede, van die mens – dít was die evangelie van die 20ste eeu.</p>
<p>Maar nou blyk dit daar is oor die wêreld heen ’n groei in religieuse bewegings en ’n oplewing en belangstelling in alles wat spiritueel is. Dit lyk weliswaar asof eens magtige kerke leegloop, en die troosgedagtes van die tradisionele Christelike leesstof moet toenemend meeding met die wyshede van Deepak Chopra of die Dalai Lama. Maar vir die oorgrote meerderheid van die mensdom is God – of iets vergelykbaar met Hom – klaarblyklik nie dood nie.</p>
<p>Dít frustreer agnostici en ateïste soos die wetenskapskrywer Richard Dawkins en Sean Carroll, ’n fisikus en kosmoloog verbonde aan die Kaliforniese Instituut van Tegnologie.</p>
<p>“They haven’t given up on believing in God’s existence, which is what drives atheists like Dawkins (and me) a little crazy,” lamenteer Carroll op sy blog.</p>
<p>Maar skeptici soos Dawkins en Carroll werk vanuit ’n vereenvoudigde oortuiging waarin aanvaar word die enigste funksie van religie is om verklarings te bied vir verskynsels wat op die oog af geen ander verklaring het nie.</p>
<p>Soos Carroll sê: “Two thousand years ago, believing in God made perfect sense; there was so much we didn’t understand about the world, and an appeal to the divine seemed to help explain the otherwise inexplicable. Those original motivations have long since evaporated.”</p>
<p>As ’n verklaring vir die onverklaarbare die enigste funksie van religie was, sou ons inderdaad die finale ondergang van religieë gesien het. Maar die meeste aanhangers van die wêreld se religieë ervaar – die donker vermoedens van ateïste ten spyt – min spanning tussen hul skeppingsverhale en teorieë soos dié van die oerknal en evolusie. Die betekenis wat religieuse verhale vir hul aanhangers inhou, moet dus méér wees as om bloot verklarend te wees. En dit is waarskynlik omdat religie ook op ’n ander manier waarde inhou dat godsdienstige oortuigings steeds by ’n beduidende deel van die mensdom voorkom.</p>
<p>Wat godsdiens is en waarom dit oorleef hoewel dit oënskynlik nie meer ’n rasionele bestaansreg het nie, het al vir vele grade in die sakke van studente gesorg. Daar kan beswaarlik nog ’n hoek wees van waar die verskynsel nié ondersoek is nie. Maar die probleem is dat die meeste benaderings tot die onderwerp dieselfde bly.</p>
<p>Vir die meeste navorsers verwys religie slegs na ’n metafisiese werklikheid, ’n tydlose en onveranderlike werklikheid wat van aanhangers vra om buite die sigbare wêreld te tree as hulle hierdie werklikheid wil ontdek. Na gelang van die denker se persoonlike oortuiging moet die bestaan van hierdie werklikheid dus as óf werklik óf gewaan bewys word – ’n taak wat logies onmoontlik is. Geen wonder daar was nog nooit ’n wenner in die debat tussen gelowige en ongelowige nie.</p>
<p>Tog het dié uitgangspunt iets reggekry: dit het God binne ’n ander werklikheid as hierdie een geplaas. Buite die wêreld en werklikheid waarin ons leef en moet laat leef, bestaan hierdie God nou vir sy aanhangers ewig en onveranderlik.</p>
<p>Op dié manier het God opgehou om te wees wie Hy was in sowel die monoteïsme van die Abrahamitiese gelowe (die Judaïsme, die Christendom en die Islam) as in die monisme (die Hindoeïsme, die Boeddhisme en die Taoïsme): ’n metafoor van hoe verskillende groepe hul werklikheid ervaar, interpreteer en leef.</p>
<p>Verskillende kulture beleef hul werklikheid op verskillende wyses. Om dié rede skep hulle verskillende metafore waarmee hulle hul spesifieke belewenis simbolies verstaan en verwoord. Maar of God dan nou die Gans Andere van die monoteïstiese religieë is en of hy die Wese van die Werklikheid van die monistiese gelowe is – nêrens in die religieuse geskiedenis van die mensdom was hy ooit ’n ónveranderlike god nie.</p>
<p>God, skryf die Stellenbosse filosoof Willie Esterhuyse oor die god van die Abrahamitiese godsdienste, is ’n god wat deur sy eie proses van evolusie gaan; ’n proses aangedryf deur die voortgaande (en nodige) kritiek wat die mensdom op sy gode het. En omdat die werklikheid waarin die mens homself bevind, voortdurend aan die verander is, sal (en moet) sy god ook verander. Die beeld wat ons daarom van God het, so meen Esterhuyse, vertel ons iets van onsself. (Dalk is dít wat bedoel word met die gedagte dat ons na die beeld van God geskape is: Wys my jou god en ek sê jou wie jy is.)</p>
<p>In plaas van die Ewige Onveranderlike is God dus die ewig veranderende. Soos die mensdom se ervaring en interpretasie van die werklikheid verander, so sal sy godsbesef verander. Juis daarom kán geen geloof sonder die wetenskap oorleef nie.</p>
<p>Die teleskope en mikroskope van die wetenskap het immers vir die mens van vandag die “aanskouinge” van die Psalmskrywers vervang. Enige geloof wat hierdie wete ignoreer, sal uiteindelik sterf.</p>
<p>Maar dit wat van ons werklik mens maak, is religie – nie religie as geloof in ’n enigste waarheid nie, maar religie as ons reaksie op ons werklikheid; religie as interpretasie van ons plek in hierdie werklikheid.</p>
<p>Religie as geloof in ’n enigste waarheid lei maklik tot fundamentalisme en ekstremisme: Wanneer mý god die enigste god is, is jóú god ’n valse god en het ek die plig om jou (en my) lewe op die spel te plaas om die ware god te verdedig. Die gevolge hiervan kan duidelik in die wêreld gesien word: daar is groeiende onverdraagsaamheid en toenemende konflik tussen verskillende godsdiensgroepe.</p>
<p>Religie as reaksie op ons werklikheid – daardie sintuiglik waarneembare werklikheid waarin magsug en geweld, hebsug en uitbuiting dikwels hoogty vier; daardie wêreld waaruit ons reënwoude verdwyn en ons riviere en oseane stik aan vullis en plastiek – lei tot wat Esterhuyse noem die geloof dat dinge anders móét wees, die hoop dat dinge anders kán wees en die liefde om dinge anders te máák.</p>
<p>Om dinge anders te maak, het ons die kennis van die wetenskap nodig; om dinge anders te wíl maak, het ons ’n nuwe begrip van God nodig.</p>
<p>In Esterhuyse se jongste boek, Die God van Genesis, interpreteer hy die eerste boek van die Christelike Bybel op ’n nuwe manier. Binne dié interpretasie het die geloof van die Ou-Testamentiese karakters nie ontwikkel rondom hul verstaan van wie en wat Gód is nie, maar eerder rondom hul eie begrip van wat reg en regverdig is, in so ’n mate dat van die Bybelse karakters selfs bereid was om God uit te daag wanneer hulle sou voel dat hy nie regverdig optree nie.</p>
<p>Dít is wat die wêreld vandag nodig het: mense wat weer bereid is om hul eie gode in die naam van reg en geregtigheid uit te daag.</p>
<p>En as sommiges die god sal moet uitdaag wat van hulle kan verwag om ander dood te maak in die naam van die sogenaamde waarheid, sal ander die god moet uitdaag wat verwag dat die aarde geplunder word in die naam van sogenaamde vooruitgang.</p>
<p>Vir gelowiges bied religie nie bloot ’n verduideliking van die onverklaarbare nie – dit bied iets méér.</p>
