Religion: Respect? Ridicule!

Sangomas to guide students

Gevaarlik omdat ‘n minder ideologiese stem óók berispe word, eerder as ondersteun word for the greater eventual good.

In ‘n manuskrip waaraan ek werk skryf ek só:

It is not religious extremism that must be destroyed, for that will be both difficult and perhaps even impossible, as new extremists will inevitably rise and flourish in the wake of those who have gone before. It is the breeding ground of extremism that must be purged. It is the cultural and intellectual accommodation of faith that has to be destroyed. Religious moderates, those reasonable and good people who preach accommodation, are paving the way for fundamentalism. By venerating specific holy books, they make it difficult to counter and oppose fundamentalist claims. Religion should be nipped at the moderates, in order to starve and prevent the growth of fundamentalism, of extremism.

Hierdie is natuurlik een van Sam Harris se vernaamste argumentslyne in sy boek The End of Faith.

Wanneer godsdiens op kulturele en intellektuele vlak geakkommodeer word, gebeur goed soos ek in When baloney detectors are switched off bespreek. Wanneer godsdiens op kulturele en intellektuele vlak geakkommodeer word, gebeur goed soos waaroor vandag berig word in Sangomas to counsel students – oor tradisionele helers wat studente aan die Universiteit van KwaZulu-Natal gaan bystaan met probleme soos “being possessed, being chosen by ancestors to stop formal education to be trained as a traditional healer, being unable to concentrate on studies owing to bad spirits or spirits that required purification and cleansing, and madness caused by bad spirits that needed to be exorcised“.

The cultural and intellectual accommodation of faith results in exactly such mindless booboisie pap!
