Nathan Bond's TART Remarks

Religion: Respect? Ridicule!

Choose your delusion

Zapiro’s cartoon about the gods and other story characters, and the xyresic responses of Graeson Haw and Ian van Niekerk made me think:

Why the God of the Koran or the Bible and not Marduk, Anu, Enil or Ninurta of Babilon; Atum or Khepri of Egypt; Bumba or Nzame of Africa; Unkulunkulu of the Zulu; Abassi of Nigeria; Ame-no-Minaka-Nushi-no-Mikoto, Takami-Musubi-no-Mikoto or Kammi-Musubi-no-Mikoto of Japan; Ymir of the Norse; Rik, Yaius or Saman of India; Haashch’eelti’I of the Navajo; Io of the Maori; Ungambikula of the Aboriginal; Coatlique of the Aztec… to suggest but a few?

Why the virgin birth of Jesus and not the virgin birth of Deganawidah of the Huron; Montezuma of the Pueblo; Sathya Sai Baba, Amenkept (Amenophis) III, Horus, Hercules, Dionysos, Krishna, Ra, Attis, Jason, Perseus, Adonis, Osiris, Mithra, Alexander the Great, Caesar Augustus, Plato or Anakin Skywalker of Star Wars fame… to suggest but a few?

Why the risen Christ and not the risen Tammuz, Osiris, Isis or Horus… to suggest but a few?

Come to think of it – why, indeed, not the Tooth Fairy?

  1. Gosh, I happened to stumble upon this old post, so I guess as I feel an answer I will answer. Simply: because of our life idioms. You must ask each individual. I personally like more than one. Jesus and Dionysos. They fit my life. I weep with Jesus and dance drunkenly with Dionysos. (And Shiva :P)

  2. Can’t miss an opportunity like this!

No, the real reality is that religion is no more than the misguided hope that you’ll get another shot at life later on to make up for all the stuff you think you lost out on first time around.

  3. Con-Tester, 1 Cor. 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
The above, is the reality, I am part of. so I know and I don’t place my trust, on hope.

  4. And please feel free, at whim, to poke fun at these perceptions. The fact remains that that summary, cynicism, obsessive-compulsive approach and my own authorship notwithstanding, just resonates increasingly forcefully with each re-reading.

  5. Call me a cynic, but that’s the best summary of religion I’ve read (or written) in a long while.

  6. “Reality,” Hans Matthysen? You really should look up the meaning of words before misusing them.

The real reality here is that religion is no more than the misguided hope that you’ll get another shot at life later on to make up for all the stuff you think you lost out on first time around.

  7. Con-tester, I know the reality of Christ and it is you that has always had the delusional concept of Christ and that is a reality.

  10. And you don’t know reality and would therefore say any old thing to promote your delusion.

  11. You don’t know Christ and would therefore not know the difference.

  12. Oh, just delete the whole lot of them. An intricate puzzle. A gifted puzzle solver. A scary solution. And no one is interested, I see. *sigh*. Where to now?

  15. Now!
    The time is now!
    Lay down your axe!
    For God has returned…

    Why have we forgotten?
    Why?
    Why?

    For the children!
    Ridicule not the children!
    Let them have a choice.
    Let them have free will.
Let there be peace among us.
    Let us understand diversity.
    Please.

    Amen!
